World Sickle Cell Awareness Day is celebrated on June 19th.
This day was established by the UN to spread awareness and educate global populations about this condition.
Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder characterized by a change in the shape of red blood cells. This alteration in the cell membrane causes the cells to break more easily, resulting in anemia. The inadequate transport of oxygen can also cause intense pain.
This condition affects millions of people around the world, from children to adults, and can be fatal. According to the World Health Organization, it is one of the leading causes of child mortality up to the age of five in African countries.
